NEW SECTION ALERT???: reading, learning and listening IF you know me you know I LOVE books!!! I love learning and I love forcing myself to try to listen to audio books or podcasts. So what I think I will do is list some of the things im reading or learning or listening to and just give a little info on them. I am half doing this as a way to keep myself accountable to the many books, audiobooks and random research escapades I embark on. Okay here we go - I am re-reading looking for Alaska by John Green which is just about my favorite book ever. It’s a book about a boy (miles) who embarks on a journey to find adventure, friendship and himself at a boarding school called Culver Creek. He meets a unique cast of characters (Alaska, Chip and more) that quickly become all sorts of important to him, has many debaucherous silly adventures, and is ultimately shook by great tragedy. I have read it a grand total of 5 times for a variety of reasons. First, I love the way John Green writes, its kinda like the way I write which is maybe why I like it so much but he just sounds so much more intelligent. Second, the character dynamics and characters themselves are relatably human, their experiences put words to emotions and feelings I didn’t quite understand for myself at the time. Third, much like the narrator of the book (miles) I was obsessed with the character Alaska. She is enigmatic, bold bright and somehow became everything I wish I could be at the time. Fourth, all the characters are too smart for their own good (they are teenagers written by an adult male). That level of profound intelligence stroked my desire to be that intelligent and made me feel like all these cool people were my friends. Fifth, the themes within the book resonated deeply with a younger karli, and still resonate today. This is very much about finding ourselves and the other things we find along the way. The last I will list for now is that this book is dramatic and contains MANY quote-able snippets for the angsty, lost soul - I will list my favorites below - “So I walked back to my room and collapsed on the bottom bunk, thinking that if people were rain, I was drizzle and she was a hurricane.” “It always shocked me when I realized that I wasn’t the only person in the world who thought and felt such strange and awful things.” “Imagining the future is a kind of nostalgia. (...) You spend your whole life stuck in the labyrinth, thinking about how you'll escape it one day, and how awesome it will be, and imagining that future keeps you going, but you never do it. You just use the future to escape the present.” “What you must understand about me is that I’m a deeply unhappy person.” If you could not tell I am OBSESSED with this book and I could go on and on about the many reasons why I love it. It made me feel seen, it make me love, it made me cry. It holds a special place in my heart forever and ever. Go read if u havent tbh its cute. I meant to write more about the other things I’m consuming rn but as per usual, Looking for Alaska stole the show. I’ll be more brief in the future.
